Munich: Paper Positions expands and Highlights celebrates 10 years

The first edition of the new POSITIONS Munich Art Fair will be held from 17 to 20 October 2019 at Reithalle Munich. Victim of its success, the fair has expanded to include works of Modern and Contemporary Art (all mediums combined) and a smaller section will remain dedicated to paper works, with all the specificities, fragilities and versatility associated with that medium.
The inaugural edition of this ‘new’ fair will feature 38 ‘international’ galleries featuring a panel of major artists like Gerhard ALTENBOURG and Markus LÜPERTZ alongside works by lesser-known artists, including colorful abstract compositions by Rita ALIMA and Mojé ASSEFJAH.
Simultaneously, and not far away, the famous Highlights International Art Fair Munich will hold its 10th edition from 16 to 20 October at the Munich Residenz. The international arts and crafts fair created in 2009 will present masterpieces from Antiquity to Modern Art.
Its particularity lies in the fact that it presents art objects from every sector of the market, and shows them in a space specially built around the works. Designed by the famous Dutch architect and scenographer, Tom Postma, the design remains minimalist and non-intrusive, allowing the works to be the centre of attention.

Munich has shown that it can host several major annual events on a regular basis and gradually expand them over time, proving their attractiveness and consolidating their dates in the ever-denser calendar of art fairs.

Olafur ELIASSON at the Tate Modern

In 2003, the Danish-Icelandic artist installed a superb glowing sun in the Turbine Hall of the famous London museum, The Weather Project, attracting more than two million people. Sixteen years after this impressive installation, the Tate Modern is organising a retrospective – the largest to date – that brings together thirty works and environments made over the past 30 years. The techniques and materials used reflect his ecological commitment.

Each of the museum’s galleries looks at a theme explored by the artist where space, movement and natural phenomena are magnified. In real life includes new paintings and sculptures but especially the cult installations for which he became famous like Your spiral View (2002), a tunnel that multiplies kaleidoscopic reflections playing with our way of evolving and perceiving the world… or the giant installation Din blinde passager (2010), consisting of a 90-metre corridor of mist that evokes the relativity of the senses. The last part of the exhibition The Expanded Studio, deals with the social and environmental concerns of the Berlin-based artist, who has notably conducted art workshops with asylum seekers. The exterior of the museum also hosts Room for one color (1997) and a new monumental sculpture from his cascades series, a characteristic of his fusion of nature with technology and his ongoing investigation into how we think about and interact with our environment.

Newly appointed United Nations Climate Ambassador, his commitment is as stimulating as his talent. Although regularly sold publicly, his auction record dates back to 2007 when his Fivefold Eye sculpture sold for more than $1.5 million at Christie’s London. Prestige sales of Contemporary Art often include works by Olafur Eliasson in their selections of exceptional works. On October 3 last at Sotheby’s London, his Colour Experiment No. 72 fetched $263,000, over twice its low estimate.
